Teen Boys and Young Adult Lit: An Important Relationship

In my recent post, Summer Reading Suggestions for Boys, several people responded with questions about finding adult literature for their teenage boys to read. I came up with some suggestions myself, as did others. And I stand by my position that teens can and should be introduced to adult literature! However, let’s not disregard adolescent lit altogether just yet.
Reading Don't Fix No Chevys - Book Review
My #1 Favorite Book of ALL TIME
I've read many books on Getting Boys to Read. Jeff and Michael's book, Reading Don't Fix No Chevys, has had the most impact on me and the hundreds of boys I have worked with over the years. This book provided concrete examples that really helped me undersatand what boys need to be successful in school. This book has been a HUGE inspiration in launching Getting Boys to Read.com and in my career as a Teacher-Librarian. Book Review of Boy Writer's by Ralph Fletcher
Overview
Ralph Fletcher is the best-known author of books that get boys to write. Many of his books are written for boys themselves. At a recent reading conference, there were more than 500 teachers that packed the room to listen to him speak. He is gifted! If you need a book to help you motivate boys with writing - LOOK NO FURTHER! Not only did I read every single page of this book from cover to cover, I also wrote notes in the page margins on practically every page. This is how special this book is for getting boys to write.
Book Review - Boys and Girls Learn Differently by Michael Gurian
Overview
As far as I know, Michale Gurian is THE MOST FAMOUS author about the differences between Boys and Girls! He gets paid big bucks to travel the world and teach people what he knows. A few hundred educators and I had the privilege to attend his workshop, compliments of our school district. (Thanks Jeffco).
This book is pretty heavy reading as it is stocked full of wonderfully brilliant information about the difference between boys and girls. It's great for any parent or educator that would like to understand gender based learning differences.

Summary:
This book is a quick, must read for librarians.
Highlights:

- The lack of male teachers contribute to a boy's perception that libraries are feminine.
- A few factors that discourage boys from reading include:
- stereotypes,
- absence of fathers,
- a lack of male role models in schools and libraries.
- Many teachers and librarians should alter their collections to meet the needs of boys.
- Interesting quote - “Boys tend to be more loud, boisterous, and physical than girls. When they exhibit these traits in the library, they are often shushed, glared at, and made to feel unwelcome in a hundred different ways – that is if they are not actually told to leave.”
- What boys read: Non-fiction, humor, sports, fantasy, adventure, etc.
- Competitive programs: chess, games, and other challenges
