Flash projection of BMW logo
The BMW logo has gone where no logo has gone before. Using a type of flash projection technology employed in digital cameras, marketing producers stamped an after-image of the BMW logo on the brains of unsuspecting viewers. The gimmick is situated on how an image of the sun is imprinted on the retina after looking at it for an instant. Seems like to be on the back of your eyelids when they are closed for a moment. At the German movie theater, a large studio flash unit called a Profoto Pro-7B was behind the screen. In front of the flash there was a BMW logo stenciled in.
The BMW commercial
People had projections into their retinas of the BMW logo during an ad for BMW motorcycles. Superbike world champion Ruben Xaus was within the commercial. Producers say the goal is to “literally get inside people’s heads” like this. This is what the BMW brand afterimage will do. They even talked about the technique. They said a “harmless photo flash” was being used. Xaus says to the audience, “I am living my dream. 'What dream?' you ask. Just close your eyes and look deep inside yourself. Perhaps it is your dream too. It is in you." At this moment the BMW logo is projected at the audience. Then the audiences notices nothing unusual. It is just a flash. Xaus then talks again. He says "Close your eyes and you will see it."
Reaction to BMW logo flash
There were a lot of audience members very impressed with it. They didn’t care that they were being tested out. Numerous wonder if burning the BMW logo into retinas at movies is even safe. There is a ton of light coming out from the Profoto Pro-7B flash although it only lasts from 1/3,000 to 1/400 of a second. Eyesight can be hurt when looking at the sun though. Even if it just for a second, the damage is still done. Brief, bright flashes of light have also been shown to trigger epileptic seizures.
